I guess it became cool to hate Apple? This is probably something that has been going on for a while, but it’s really manifested itself with the release of the iPhone 5, which according to some is an absolute joke and/or the devil. I don’t know. Looks like a new smartphone to me.
The “smartphone wars” are basically the adult version of the Genesis/Super Nintendo console wars. You see, most of us couldn’t have both, so we had to fabricate a bizarre loyalty to the one we had, even though to any unbiased outsider they were both good, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Now a days, the console wars aren’t as intense, at least for adults, because a lot of us can afford multiple consoles now. But smartphones? You’re not likely to have more than one of those. So you pick a side, and then you go to war for it on Internet message boards, fighting some stupid crusade over whose luxury item is better.
